Cross Country 2017 Season In Review

2017 marked one of the best seasons in recent history for the Cleveland State cross country team,
with the Vikings capturing multiple team and individual titles throughout the season.

2017 RACE-BY-RACE RESULTS | ALL-TIME TOP PERFORMANCES LIST

 

TEAM HONORS

• Cleveland State finished fourth at the 2017 Horizon League Championship,
tying the highest finish at the #HLXC meet in program history.
• As a team, the Vikings recorded five top-four finishes during the year,
including a pair of titles at the Lock Haven Invitational and Jenna Strong Fall Classic.
• Cleveland State's first place finish at the Lock Haven Invitational marked the first time
under head coach Joe Jaketic that the Vikings have captured a team title.
• For the third time under head coach Joe Jaketic the Vikings participated in the Disney Cross Country Classic,
finishing second as a team in the highly competitive field. 

 

INDIVIDUAL ACCOLADES

Karen Barrientos broke her own school record on the 5K course at the Jenna Strong Fall Classic, posting a time of 17:59 to capture the individual title.
Barrientos' time marked the first-ever sub 18-minute 5K for a Viking.
Anna Brandt set a freshman class record at the Jenna Strong Fall Classic, finishing the 5K course with a time of 18:25,
becoming the first Viking freshman all-time to record a sub 19-minute 5K.
Anna Brandt also set a freshman class record on the 6K course, with her season-best time of 22:20 at the LHU Invitational.
Karen Barrientos was named the Horizon League Runner of the Week on September 26,
following her sixth place finish at the LHU Invitational (6K – 22:14) that helped Cleveland State to its first-ever team title.
• Throughout the season, the Vikings rewrote the CSU Top Performances List,
with three Vikings recording 20 top-50 5K times and six Vikings recording 16 top-50 6K times. 

 

ALL-HORIZON LEAGUE HONORS

Anna Brandt was named the Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-League First Team,
after finishing seventh at the league championship with a 6K time of 22:52.
Karen Barrientos earned a spot on the All-League Second Team, after placing eighth at the league championship with a 6K time of 22:53. 

 

ACADEMIC HONORS

• Senior Karen Barrientos was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team, carrying a 3.78 GPA while studying health sciences and psychology.

 

HEAD COACH JOE JAKETIC

• Following a 13-year tenure as the head coach of the Vikings, Joe Jaketic announced his retirement following the 2017 season.
Jaketic, who has worked in some fashion at Cleveland State for the last 43 years, led the Vikings to success not only on the cross country course,
but also in the classroom. Under Jaketic, Cleveland State has earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors
and Academic Progress Rate accolades nine times, while three of his student-athletes have been named Cleveland State Valedictorians.
