Barrientos Named To #HLXC All-Academic Team

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Horizon League announced the 2017 Cross Country All-Academic Teams Wednesday afternoon, with Cleveland State senior Karen Barrientos earning a spot on the 10-person team.

Barrientos carries a 3.78 GPA pursuing a degree in health sciences with a psychology minor. After transferring to Cleveland State as a junior, the Ashtabula, Ohio native has earned a spot on the Cleveland State University Dean's List every semester that she has been eligible. Barrientos is also a Cleveland State Athletic Academic honoree.

On the course, Barrientos holds Cleveland State records in both the 5K and 6K events, and currently owns five of the top-10 5K performances and four of the top-10 6K performances in the CSU record book.

Barrientos' 5K record came earlier this season, when she became the first Viking to break the 18-minute mark, posting a time of 17:59 to win the Jenna Strong Fall Classic. Her personal-best and CSU record 6K time came as a junior, when she recorded a time of 22:10 to earn First Team honors at the Horizon League Championship.

Throughout her brief tenure at Cleveland State, Barrientos has captured a pair of individual titles and six top-five individual finishes, while she has also led the Vikings to a pair of team championships.
