Barrientos Earns First Team All-Horizon League Honors

KENOSHA, Wis. – Cleveland State cross country junior Karen Barrientos earned First Team All-Horizon League honors  Saturday morning, becoming the first-ever runner to earn First Team accolades under head coach Joe Jaketic. Barrientos finished the 2016 Horizon League Championship with a fifth place finish, posting a 6K time of 22:10.

Barrientos' fifth place finish is the best finish for a Viking under Jaketic at the Horizon League Championship, just ahead of Ashlyn Woods' eighth place finish at the 2014 championship race. Barrientos also joins Woods as the only All-League honorees during Jaketic's tenure.

Throughout the 2016 season, Barrientos has been Cleveland State's top finisher during all eight races, and has recorded five top-10 finishes (LHU Invitational-1st, Friendship Invitational-5th, Horizon League Championship-5th, Storm Invitational-6th, Jenna Strong Fall Classic-6th).

Barrientos' 6K time of 22:10 marked a career-high for the junior, and also marked the fastest 6K time in program history.

Barrientos was one of seven runners to earn a spot on the All-Horizon League First Team, joining Rachel Levy (Oakland), Miranda Haas (Oakland), McKinsie Klim (Youngstown State), Alana Koepf (Oakland), Ashley Burr (Oakland), and Devon Sutton (Detroit).
