CLEVELAND, Ohio - For the fourth consecutive season, the Cleveland State volleyball team has been honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for its success in the classroom by being named a recipient of the 2008 AVCA Academic Team Award.

The Vikings, who posted a team grade point average of 3.58, were one of 70 Division I schools to earn the award.

"This award is a direct reflection of the well-rounded student-athletes that we have brought into the program," head coach Chuck Voss said. "It is a testament to how hard the team works during the year to be successful student-athletes both in the classroom and on the court."

The award, which began during the 1992-93 academic year, honors college and high school teams that display excellence in the classroom by maintaining a cumulative 3.30 GPA or better during the school year.

It is the second academic award the Vikings have received this year having already claimed the "Best of the Best" Team Award at the 18th annual John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon in April. The award is given to the sport having the highest team grade point average in the CSU athletics department.

The Vikings, who return five starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's Horizon League Championship squad, will open the season at the Northern Illinois Invitational (Aug. 29-30).
