Chuck Voss returns for his 24th season as the head coach of Cleveland State volleyball during the 2023 campaign, looking to continue CSU’s trend of being a perennial powerhouse in the Horizon League.

Throughout his tenure at Cleveland State, Voss has guided the Vikings to five Horizon League Regular Season titles and five Horizon League Tournament crowns. Voss has also led Cleveland State to eight 20-win seasons, and enters the 2023 campaign as the program’s all-time winningest coach with 393 career victories with the Vikings.

Voss, who is a six-time Horizon League Coach of the Year honoree, has led Cleveland State to 17 winning seasons during his tenure, including a stretch of 10-straight winning campaigns from 2009 through 2018.

During his 21-year stint at Cleveland State, Voss has mentored 28 all-league selections, 22 all-newcomer team selections, 13 all-region honorees, and seven All-Americans. Voss has also led 11 Vikings to 14 major Horizon League accolades over the years, most recently mentoring Laken Voss to Newcomer of the Year honors last season.

Under Voss’ guidance, the Vikings have excelled in the classroom as well, earning the Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award five times, while also being honored at Cleveland State’s annual John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon, picking up the ‘Best of the Best Award’ following the 2007 and 2008 seasons for maintaining the highest GPA among the department’s then 16 teams.

Voss, who enters the 2023 season with a record of 393-279 at Cleveland State, became the first coach in program history to record 350 career wins during the 2018 campaign, and is the only active coach in the Horizon League to achieve the feat at their current school.

Voss’ continued dedication to the Cleveland State volleyball program has led the Vikings to become one of the top teams in the state of Ohio, and a Horizon League Championship contender year-in and year-out. Over the last 13 seasons the Vikings have made five NCAA Tournament appearances, and have garnered national recognition to earn neutral site matches during their 2007 and 2016 NCAA Tournament bids.

Since Cleveland State’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, Voss has led the Vikings to a 263-144 record (.646) including a 146-72 (.669) mark in Horizon League matches. Throughout this 14-year stretch, Voss has turned Cleveland State into a prominent name among Division I volleyball teams.

The climb to be a championship contender year-after-year was not an easy one though. When Voss arrived in Cleveland to take over the program in 2000, the Vikings had not enjoyed a winning season in 17 years and were coming off a year in which they won just eight matches and were just 3-9 in the league. But that did not deter Voss, who guided CSU to a respectable 19-36 mark during his first two seasons at the helm.

It was in 2002 that Voss really began to show what he could do on the sidelines, leading CSU to its first winning season (18-13) in 19 years. Since then, Voss has been at the helm for 14 winning seasons with the Vikings – making Cleveland State one of just two current Horizon League teams to have at least 14 winning seasons during this span.

Voss recorded another program first during the 2004 season, leading the Vikings to the Horizon League Championship match for the first time in program history. Over the next 14 seasons, Voss has guided the Vikings back to the title match eight times and has been part of five championship teams during this stretch (2007, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017) - becoming one of just two active coaches with multiple league titles under their name.

Voss came to Cleveland State after serving as an assistant coach at Missouri for three seasons. While in Columbia, he was responsible for recruiting, travel planning, preparing scouting reports, academics, camps and other various day-to-day coaching duties.

While his recruiting efforts didn’t necessarily show up in the win column during his three-year tenure, Missouri went 24-7 in 2000 (Voss’ first year in Cleveland), won 14 matches in the always-tough Big XII, was nationally ranked for part of the year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history - all with the players that Voss helped sign.

Prior to his stint at Missouri, Voss served as the head coach at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 1995-96. While there, he improved the team’s record from 10-21 to 23-15, earning 1996 NAIA Midwest Classic Conference Coach of the Year honors.

A 1994 graduate of Ohio State with a degree in physical education, Voss was a two-year starter as a setter and a captain on the men’s varsity volleyball team.

He ranks seventh all-time at OSU with 2,836 assists and fifth with a career average of 13.13 assists per game. He was one of only 48 participants invited to both the 1990 and ‘91 United States Olympic Festivals.

After graduation, Voss got his coaching career started by spending a year as a student assistant for the Buckeye women’s squad under head coach Jim Stone.

Voss and his wife Margo have two daughters, London (23) and Laken (19), and two sons, Sterling (28) and Denver (25). The family resides in Amherst, Ohio.
