Cleveland State Volleyball Falls In Five-Set Match At Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis.  – The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out its mini two-match roadswing Saturday evening, dropping a five-set match at Green Bay.

Offensively, Laken Voss had a team-best 17 kills, while Lydia Latimer added 14 and Madison Quirino chipped in nine.

Emma Walker led five Vikings with double-digit digs, posting 25 on the match. Voss and Sarah DeGeorge both added 16 digs, while Karly Klaer notched 14 and Audrey McConihe added 10.

Klaer also finished with 44 assists on the day, giving her and Voss double-doubles against the Phoenix.

The trio of Latimer, Klaer and Voss all tallied three total blocks on the day.

After a back-and-forth start to the opening frame, the Vikings were able to notch three straight points on a trio of kills from Laken Voss and Madalynn Butler, gaining a 13-10 advantage midway through the set. Cleveland State went on to hold a slight lead over the next few plays, until Green Bay was able to tie the frame at 16-16 forcing a CSU timeout.

Out of the timeout, the Vikings were able to regain a 17-16 lead on a Lydia Latimer kill, before extending their lead to 20-17 on a Karly Klaer kill a few plays later. Cleveland State was then able to hold off a late Phoenix run, eventually gaining its third set point on another Klaer kill before closing out the 28-26 first set victory on a Liberty Torres kill.

After dropping the next two sets, the Vikings responded with a 25-20 win in the fourth frame, evening the match at 2-2. Cleveland State was able to gain an early 6-2 lead during the frame on five straight points, before extending its lead to 10-3 a few plays later, forcing Green Bay into a pair of early timeouts.

Cleveland State then held a sizeable lead over the next few plays, gaining a 15-8 advantage on back-to-back kills from Latimer to distance the Vikings late in the frame, before once again holding off a late Green Bay run to capture the set on a pair of Phoenix errors.

During the fifth and deciding set, the Phoenix was able to gain an early 3-0 lead and never looked back, as Green Bay clinched the five-set victory with a 15-9 win during the final frame.
