CLEVELAND STATE MATCH NOTES

 

QUICK SETS
The Cleveland State volleyball team will return home to continue the 2021 campaign this week, hosting Robert Morris on Monday, March 1 and Tuesday, March 2. The Vikings enter the week with an even 5-5 record on the year, while Robert Morris is currently 0-8 on the season.

ENTERING THE WEEK…
The Vikings will be looking for their second series sweep of the season…Cleveland State will be trying to improve to 4-2 at home this year…The Vikings will be facing Robert Morris for the first time as #HLVB opponents.

2021 #HLVB PLAY
This year's Horizon League schedule will have a different look to it, as the Vikings will face the same opponent in back-to-back matches each week. Cleveland State is scheduled to host two more #HLVB series against Robert Morris and Youngstown State, while the Vikings will still travel to Wright State throughout the rest of the season.

…NEW TO THE #HLVB LINEUP
Prior to the 2020-21 academic year, the Horizon League welcomed two new members, with Purdue Fort Wayne and Robert Morris joining the lineup. This week's matches against the Colonials will mark the second straight week that the Vikings are facing a first-time Horizon League opponent (Purdue Fort Wayne last week).

SCOUTING THE COLONIALS
Robert Morris enters the week with an 0-8 record on the year, most recently dropping a two-match series against Wright State…The Colonials are playing in their first year as a member of the Horizon League…RMU's Whitney Brown ranks fifth among league players averaging 8.96 assists per set with 242 total helpers on the season…Brown, along with Maria Alfano both enter the week ranked in the RMU Career Record Book - Brown in assists and Alfano in total blocks.

GREENE ON THE ATTACK
Entering the week, senior Hannah Greene is averaging a team-best 3.14 kills per set - a mark that ranks sixth among Horizon League players. Greene has notched double-digit kills in seven of the 10 matches so far this season, including in each of the last four contests. Last time out, Greene posted a season-high 17 kills against the Mastodons to lead the Viking offense, while she has also led the Cleveland State attack in six other matches this year.

MILLER LEADING THE VIKING OFFENSE
Freshman Abby Miller continues to lead the Viking offense, serving as Cleveland State's primary setter through the first five #HLVB series. So far this season, Miller  is averaging 9.47 assists per set to rank second among league players. After combining for 91 helpers at Purdue Fort Wayne last time out, Miller leads the league with 341 total assists on the year. As just the third freshman to lead the Viking offense as the primary setter over the last 13 seasons, Miller posted back-to-back 40-assist matches against the Mastodons, including a career-high of 48 in the first match of the week.

KUCIA IN THE CSU BACK ROW
Freshman Caroline Kucia once again led the Viking defense at Purdue Fort Wayne last time out, combining for 32 digs as the Cleveland State libero. Kucia, who is averaging 3.21 digs per set since stepping into the libero role, notched 15 in the first match of the week and followed that up with a season-high 17 digs in the series finale. Kucia has been leading a Viking defense that is averaging 15.53 digs per set on the season, holding their opponents to a .186 hitting percentage - the fourth lowest clip among #HLVB teams.

2021 #HLVB PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
So far this season, the Vikings have picked up one weekly honor from the Horizon League, as senior Hannah Greene was named one of the Players of the Week on February 18. Greene earned the honor after combining for a team-high 25 kills on a .367 hitting percentage during the Oakland series, while also posting six total blocks against the Grizzlies.

CAREER RECORD BOOK TRACKING: HANNAH GREENE
Entering the week, senior Hannah Greene is ranked in the top-10 in three CSU Career Record Book categories, as she ranks eighth in block assists with 304, tied for eighth in solo blocks with 59 and ninth in total blocks with 363. Greene moved up in all three categories following last week's series at Purdue Fort Wayne after posting nine block assists and two solo blocks against the Mastodons.

CAREER RECORD BOOK TRACKING: EMILY DEGEORGE
Senior Emily DeGeorge moved into sixth place on the CSU Career Digs List following the Purdue Fort Wayne series last time out, entering the week with 1,230 career digs. DeGeorge combined for 19 digs against the Mastodons, including a 10-dig effort in the series finale which marked the 67th double-digit dig match of her career. DeGeorge needs just 10 more digs to move into a tie for fifth place on the list.

SCHOEN NAMED CLEVELAND STATE SAAC PRESIDENT
Prior to the 2020-21 academic school year, Cleveland State senior Halle Schoen was named the Cleveland State SAAC President, and will serve in the role for the remainder of the year. This will be Schoen's third year as an active member of CSU SAAC, as she was the Community Service Co-Chair as a junior and an active Board Member as a sophomore.

VIKINGS POST STRONG SEMESTER IN THE CLASSROOM
With the 2020 Fall Semester in the books, the Vikings posted one of their best semesters in program history, finishing with a 3.86 Team GPA for the term - the highest GPA among all 18 Cleveland State teams last semester. In addition, six Vikings were named to the Cleveland State President's List3.90+ (Halle Schoen, Audrey McConihe, Lydia Latimer, Keanna Avery, Sarah Green, Abby Miller), while nine Vikings earned a spot on the Cleveland State Dean's List3.25+ (Hannah Greene, Emily DeGeorge, Lindsey Tout, Chelsea Penfield, Peyton Bloomer, Caroline Kucia, Madalynn Butler, Ainslie McLaughlin, Sam Snow).

HEAD COACH CHUCK VOSS
Chuck Voss is in his 21st season at the helm of the Vikings, and owns a 367-239 (.605) overall record at Cleveland State. Under Voss the Vikings have recorded 16 winning seasons, including a streak of 10 straight from 2009 to 2018. Cleveland State has eclipsed the 20-win mark eight times since Voss took over the program, and has captured Horizon League Tournament titles five times (2007, 2012, 2015, 2016 & 2017) under his guidance. During the 2016 season Voss became the all-time winningest coach in program history, and then later became the only active Horizon League coach to reach the 350-win mark at their current school.
