Volleyball Earns 3-0 Sweep At Green Bay To Begin 2021

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Cleveland State volleyball team opened the 2021 season Monday afternoon, as the Vikings posted a 3-0 sweep at Green Bay. 

Match Stats
Hannah Greene and Emily DeGeorge led the Viking offense with eight kills each, while Abby Miller added six and London Portis chipped in five kills.
Abby Miller finished the match with 18 assists.
Audrey McConihe posted a team-high 11 digs, while Caroline Kucia added eight and Lindsey Tout posted seven.
Emily DeGeorge and Chelsea Penfield both tallied four blocks against the Phoenix, while Hannah Greene added three.
• The Vikings held Green Bay to .148 hitting clip on the match.

Match Notes
• Monday's match marked the first contest for the Vikings in 436 days.
• This marked the fifth time over the last seven seasons that Cleveland State has won its #HLVB opener.
• The trio of Madalynn Butler, Abby Miller and Caroline Kucia all made their collegiate debuts against the Phoenix. 

The Match
During the opening set the Vikings were able to gain a 12-9 advantage on a Chelsea Penfield and Emily DeGeorge block midway through the frame, and went on to hold this lead over the next few points until Green Bay was able to earn a slight one-point lead at the 15-14 mark. The two teams then traded points over the next few plays, until the Vikings were once again able to gain a multiple point lead at 22-20 to force a Green Bay timeout.

Cleveland State went on to hold the edge for the rest of the set then, and closed out the frame with four straight points to earn the 25-21 first set victory on a London Portis solo block.

The Vikings then carried their momentum into the second set, as they jumped out to a 10-1 lead before forcing a Phoenix timeout. The Vikings then went on to hold a sizeable advantage throughout the remainder of the frame, picking up the 2-0 match advantage on a Hannah Greene kill.

The third set was much of the same, as the Vikings were once again able to jump out to a quick lead at the 11-5 mark on a Phoenix error, and go on to hold the advantage for the rest of the frame. The Vikings once again closed out the set on a Hannah Greene kill, coming away with the 3-0 victory against the Phoenix to open the 2021 season with a 1-0 record.
