CLEVELAND, Ohio – With a 3-0 sweep against Green Bay Saturday afternoon, the Cleveland State volleyball team moved into a tie for first place in the Horizon League standings, finishing the weekend with a 16-8 overall record and a 10-2 mark in #HLVB play.

With the sweep over the Phoenix, Cleveland State has now recorded double-digit Horizon League wins in four straight seasons, and eight of the last 10 years.
Sara Skeens led the Viking offense with 17 kills against the Phoenix, marking her sixth straight double-digit kill match. Rachel Stover added nine kills for Cleveland State, while Emily DeGeorge tallied eight and Trinniti Hall finished with seven.
The Viking defense was led by Rachael Dohar who posted 16 digs, while DeGeorge tallied nine and MacKenzie Conner added seven.
As a team, the Vikings posted 7.0 total blocks, including three from Hannah Greene, Skeens and Hall.
During the opening set Cleveland State was able to get out to a 13-8 lead midway through the frame following a Stover kill, but Green Bay worked its way back into the set, eventually tying the frame at 18-18. The two teams then traded points – and leads – over the next few plays, until a 3-0 run from the Vikings gave Cleveland State a 23-21 advantage after a pair of Green Bay errors. The Vikings were able to hold the lead for the rest of the frame then, picking up the 25-23 first set victory on a Hall kill.
Once again the Vikings were able to gain a lead at the midway point of the second set, as they gained a 15-11 advantage following a DeGeorge kill. Cleveland State was then able to hold the lead for the rest of the set – holding off a Phoenix comeback – to pick up the 25-22 second set victory on a Skeens solo block.
During the third and final set, both teams traded points throughout the entire frame, with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead until the 23-20 mark when Cleveland State earned a three-point advantage following a Stover kill and a Phoenix error. The Vikings were then able to gain match-point on another Green Bay error, but back-to-back points from the Phoenix put the score at 24-23 before Cleveland State was able to finally close out the match with another DeGeorge kill.
