Vikings Pick Up 3-0 Victory At Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team got back on the winning track Friday, picking up a 3-0 sweep at Youngstown State. With the win, the Vikings improve to 13-8 on the season and 7-2 in Horizon League play.

Friday's victory over the Penguins gave Cleveland State the season sweep in the series, and marked the eighth straight win for the Vikings over YSU. 

Sara Skeens led the Viking offense with 14 kills, while Emily DeGeorge added 11 kills and Trinniti Hall finished with 10. Christina Grecol tallied 40 assists on Cleveland State's 50 kills against the Penguins.

Rachael Dohar led the Viking defense with 14 digs, while DeGeorge added nine.

Hannah Greene recorded a team-high seven blocks, while Rachel Stover added four blocks and DeGeorge notched three.

During the opening set the Vikings were able to control play from start to finish, jumping out to a 7-0 lead and then extending this advantage to 16-5 midway through the frame. Cleveland State then held this sizeable lead for the remainder of the set, earning the 25-15 victory on a Skeens kill.

After trading points to begin the second frame, the Vikings went on a 6-2 run to gain an 11-7 lead following a Greene kill, and then rattled off seven straight points to extend their advantage to 18-7 on a DeGeorge solo block. Cleveland State was then able to control play for the rest of the set, earning a 25-16 win to go up 2-0 heading into the intermission.

The Vikings were once again able to get out to a quick lead during the third set, and then fought off a YSU run to gain a 15-8 advantage on a Skeens kill. Cleveland State was then able to hold the advantage for the rest of the set, closing out the match with a 25-20 third frame victory.
