Volleyball 2017 Season In Review

For the third straight season the Cleveland State volleyball team captured the Horizon League Regular Season and Tournament titles,
completing their 'Fight For Five' with one of the most talented rosters in program history.

2017 #HLVB CHAMPIONS

• The Vikings finished the regular season with a 13-3 league record, capturing their fifth Horizon League Regular Season title
and the right to host the 2017 Horizon League Tournament.
• As the top seed in the Horizon League Tournament, Cleveland State picked up a 3-1 victory against Northern Kentucky in the semifinals
and then posted a 3-0 sweep over Green Bay in the championship match
• This marked the third straight #HLVB Tournament title for the Vikings, and the fifth in program history.
• Cleveland State became just the second team in Horizon League history to win three straight #HLVB Tournament titles,
and the first to do so since the 1994 season.

 

TEAM HONORS

• Cleveland State finished the season with a 22-8 record, marking the eighth 20-win season under head coach Chuck Voss
and the 17th 20-win campaign in program history.
• The Vikings made their fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, falling at 11th-seeded Utah in the First Round.
• Entering the NCAA Tournament the Vikings were on a 12-match winstreak – the second longest winstreak for the Vikings over the last 18 seasons.
• The Vikings finished the season with a .251 hitting percentage – a clip that ranks second in the CSU Single-Season Record Book
and marks just the third time the team has hit .250 or better.
• Cleveland State's 1,630 total kills ranks eighth in the CSU Single-Season Record Book, while the 1,853 total digs ranks 10th.
• The Vikings finished the season at the top of the league standings in hitting percentage (.250), assists (13.19) and kills (13.93).

 

INDIVIDUAL ACCOLADES

• With a 19-kill performance against UIC (Oct. 20) Alexis Middlebrooks became the 16th Viking all-time to eclipse 1,000 career kills,
and ended the season with 1,102 total kills.
• Freshman Emily DeGeorge finished the season with 325 total digs – marking a freshman class record.
Shannon Grega and Gina Kilner both picked up Horizon League Weekly accolades throughout the season,
Grega earning Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 9) and Kilner earned Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 11).
Gina Kilner was named Honorable Mention AVCA All-Region.
• The Vikings collected eight all-tournament accolades throughout the non-league portion of their schedule,
including the Chippewa Challenge MVP in Shannon Grega.
Gina Kilner recorded her first-ever triple-double against IUPUI (Sept. 29) with 46 assists, 14 digs and 10 kills,
becoming just the fourth Viking under head coach Chuck Voss to record a triple-double.

 

ALL-HORIZON LEAGUE HONORS

Shannon Grega was named the Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-League First Team,
after averaging 4.64 digs per set and leading a Viking defense that held its opponents to a .196 hitting percentage.
Gina Kilner was named the Setter of the Year and earned a spot on the All-League First Team,
after recording 1,262 total assists while helping Cleveland State to a .251 hitting percentage as a team.
Alexis Middlebrooks was named to the All-League First Team, becoming the seventh three-time all-league honoree in program history
after averaging 3.03 kills per set on a .318 hitting percentage.
Sara Skeens was named Honorable Mention All-League, after averaging a team-best 3.10 kills per set.
Emily DeGeorge was named to the All-Freshman Team, after averaging 2.78 digs and 1.74 kills per set as a six-rotation player.
• Chuck Voss was named the Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career,
after leading the Vikings to their fifth Horizon League Regular Season & Tournament titles.

 

ACADEMIC HONORS

• Senior Shannon Grega was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the second straight season,
carrying a 3.60 GPA while pursuing a degree in nursing.
