Vikings Host Akron In Preseason Scrimmage

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team hit the court for the first time during the 2017 season Friday evening, hosting Akron in a five-set scrimmage.

With everyone seeing limited playing time during the scrimmage, freshman Emily DeGeorge led the Viking offense with a team-high 10 kills, while Gina Kilner added nine and the trio of Alexis Middlebrooks, Trinniti Hall, and Hannah Greene all added seven.

Kilner and redshirt freshman Christina Hudgens split the setting duties during the scrimmage, with Kilner recording 28 assists and Hudgens notching 18 helpers.

Senior Shannon Grega started off the match as the libero, recording 14 digs, while sophomore Jordan Verbiak finished the match as the libero notching 12 digs. DeGeorge posted a double-double on the night, also finishing with 14 digs.

Rachel Stover recorded a team-high four blocks, while Greene and Ammaarah Williams both added three blocks.

As a team, the Vikings notched nine service aces, with a team-best three coming from Grega and two from Verbiak.

On the offensive side of the ball, Greene tallied a .600 hitting percentage (7-1-10), while Middlebrooks posted a .583 clip (7-0-12).

Senior Katie Mihalik also chipped in six kills and one block, while freshman Halle Schoen posted four kills and seven digs. 

The Vikings will officially kick off the 2017 season next weekend, as they travel to Purdue for the Purdue Mortar Board Invitational. Over the two-day tournament Cleveland State will face Alabama, Purdue and Oral Roberts.
