Gaskins Places 2nd In Pentathlon At #HLTF Indoor Championship

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Cleveland State track and field team completed a successful first day at the 2019 Horizon League Indoor Championships Saturday, highlighted by a second place finish in the pentathlon by sophomore Hannah Gaskins.

Sprints
Cleveland State posted program records in all three sprint events on the day, while at least one Viking qualified for the finals in each event. In the 60 Meter Hurdles, Monica Johnson and Mijah Collier both qualified for the finals race, Johnson placing fourth in the prelims with a CSU record time of 8.85, and Collier placing seventh in the prelims with a time of 8.93.

Tylar Mixon qualified in both the 60 Meter Dash and 200 Meter Dash, posting program records in both prelim events. Mixon finished fourth in the 60 with a time of 7.76 and fourth in the 200 with a time of 25.32.

Mid Distance
Mijah Collier recorded Cleveland State's best finish in the mid-distance events, earning a spot in the 400 Meter Dash finals after placing eighth in the prelims. Collier crossed the finish line in a time of 58.95, marking a program record in the event.

Distance
The 5000 Meter Run was the only individual running event to be contested as a final Saturday, with Jessica Finley and Abbey Rojeck both competing for the Vikings. Finley placed 21st overall with a time of 19:01.28, while Rojeck placed 23rd in a time of 19:34.69.

Pentathlon
Two Vikings competed in the pentathlon, with Hannah Gaskins placing second overall with a program record 3319 total points, and Julianne Dorothal finished seventh with 2988 points. Gaskins and Dorothal both recorded program records in the Long Jump event, as Gaskins finished second with a mark of 5.20 and Dorothal finished seventh (5.05). Gaskins also recorded a top-two finish in the High Jump (1.64), while she won the 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:28.89.

Relays
The Distance Medley Relay was the lone relay for day one of the #HLTF Championship, with the Cleveland State quartet of Lily Michael, De'Vine Shelton, Deja Emmanus, and Anna Brandt finishing in a time of 13:39.08.

Day two of the 2019 Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships will take place tomorrow (Sunday, February 24), with field events set to begin at 9:15 a.m. and running events set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
