EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Strong doubles play was the catch phrase on the final day at the Spartan Invitational as the Vikings claimed a doubles win over Horizon League opponent Detroit and split a doubles contest with Morehead State.
One day after struggling in their only doubles contest, the Vikings came out strong on Sunday and put a good effort forward, winning five of the eight matches in claiming a 3-1 win over Detroit and a 2-2 tie vs. Morehead State. In the final contest of the afternoon, CSU fell to host Michigan State in singles, 8-0.
"I'm happy that we came out here early this morning and had a much better effort in doubles," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We have a lot of hard work ahead of us to get where we need to in doubles, but I think that we will eventually have a strong doubles lineup.
"Even though our doubles teams are still getting used to playing with each other, I thought they really stepped up today. Any match against a Horizon League school is important to us so the doubles win over Detroit is a good sign for us."
The tandem of sophomore Denisa Muntean and freshman Jackie Tabb paced the doubles effort with a pair of victories on Sunday. The duo opened the day with a 9-7 win over Detroit's Kelly Davis and Svetlana Flankova and came back later in the morning to post an 8-4 win over Morehead State's Alix Lakow andLauren Delaney.
"Denisa and Jackie are one of those teams who will only get better as they play together more," Etzkin said.
The Vikings will not be in action again as a team this fall as their lone remaining competition on the schedule is the ITA Regional, which will be hosted by Michigan State from Oct. 17-22.
