MUNCIE, Ind. - Cleveland State, with just four of its eight team members competing this weekend, didn't play like it was shorthanded on Friday (Sept. 29), as all four Vikings in action scored at least one victory at the Ball State Invitational at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.

Senior Sarah Galon won both of her singles matches, posting a dominant first-round win over Dayton's Kate Mellion, 6-2, 6-1, and then following that up with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Tiffani Foster of Wright State. Foster, like Galon, was an All-Horizon League selection a year ago.

"That was a big win and a great match," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Sarah is playing like a senior. She's off to a great start and she's leading our team by example."

Galon is now 8-1 on the season and advances to the semi-finals in Flight A of the invitational.

Galon also teamed with fellow senior Morgan Ungerott for an 8-4 win over Coulson/Lish of IPFW. The duo, 22-8 last season, is now 7-1. Freshman Charlotte Gibbons and Kristin Chamberlain lost, 9-7, in their doubles match.

"Sarah and Morgan played very strong," Etzkin said. "They weren't as sharp against IPFW before (on Tuesday, Sept. 26) and they won easily this time.

"I'd like to see our doubles teams serve better, but overall, I was happy with how we played."

Ungerott also picked up a dominant first-round victory, 6-1, 6-1 over Lisa Bartelheim of IPFW. Ungerott fell in the second round to UW-Milwaukee's Ashley Schoneman in three sets, 6-1, 1-6 (10-3).

Gibbons and Chamberlain also each split a pair of singles matches. After falling in the first round, Gibbons won, 6-4, 6-3 over Hanna Hager of IPFW to capture a berth in the consolation semi-finals. Chamberlain won easily in the first round, 6-2, 6-1 over Alexa Rang of IPFW before losing in the second round.

Juniors Lindsay Sellers and Jenn Myers, who have both been injured for most of the fall season, were joined out of action by junior Christine Vogelgesang and freshman Denisa Muntean. CSU only took the four competing players on the trip.
