BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Jen Myers and Charlotte Gibbons won a pair of singles matches each to advance to the championship match in their respective singles flights and the Vikings went 3-2 in doubles play on the first day of the Bowling Green Invitational.

"This was a very solid day for us," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "This is probably the toughest tournament field that we will see this fall and the results show it.

"Too get two players into the singles finals speaks highly about the quality of the players on this roster. Both Jen (Myers) and Charlotte (Gibbons) were impressive today because each had to overcome adversity to win tough matches. Without the mental toughness that they have, the results could have easily gone the other way."

Myers used a pair of super tiebreaker victories to advance to the championship match at No. 3 singles. She upended Bradley's Jess Buterbaugh, 6-4, 2-6, 9-7 in the opening round before rallying from a set down to outlast Youngstown State's Tanisha Welch, 6-7, 6-2, 13-11.

Gibbons needed a 1-6, 7-5, 11-9 super tiebreaker win to get past Bowling Green's Jenna Nussbaum in the opening round but regrouped to sweep past Toledo's Jessica Azoulay in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the title contest at No. 7 singles.

After a lackluster performance in doubles last weekend at Bradley, the Vikings regrouped and restructured during the week and came out firing today, winning three of the five double matches.

"We took a good hard look at our lineup and decided to move some players around this week," Etzkin said. "The groupings we used today does a better job of taking advantage of each player strengths and weaknesses which will give us a better chance for success."

Viking doubles teams are still alive in championship play in the No. 2 and No. 3 flights after each team won their only match on Saturday.

The freshmen duo of Melissa Holzinger and Jackie Tabb teamed at No. 2 to go overtime to defeat Detroit's Maricevic/Weldon, 9-7 while returners Denisa Muntean and Morgan Ungerott teamed to rout Bradley's Krubeck/.Donohue, 8-3.

Play continues at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning with the first of two doubles rounds being held, followed by the championship and consolation championship contests in singles.
