CLEVELAND - Standout tennis players Charlotte Gibbons and Denisa Muntean have signed national letters of intent to attend Cleveland State and join the women's tennis team, Viking head coach Brian Etzkin announced on Wednesday (May 31).

"The program is in great shape for next year and the foreseeable future," Etzkin said. "We are adding two very good players to a team that will return every player after finishing fourth in the regular season last year."

Gibbons, a native of Irchester, England, is a seasoned competitor at the national and international level. She is number one in her county and ranked in the top 30 in the United Kingdom by the Lawn Tennis Association while helping her club team, Setton Coldfield, maintain first place in the National Club League. A winner of the National Road to Wimbledon doubles title in 2002, she won the county closed tournament four straight years, as well as a grand prix title and a finalist showing.

"Charlotte will be able to come in next season and make and immediate impact," Etzkin said. "She is a versatile player and will be a strong contributor in both singles and doubles."

Muntean, a native of Toronto, Ontario, is one of the top junior players in the province. She has trained at several of the top tennis academies, including the Canadian National Training Center and the International Tennis Academy in Florida, which has helped her to improve her game in the last two years.

"I feel that Denisa will improve by leaps and bounds at the collegiate level," Etzkin commented. "Her best tennis is definitely in front of her."

The women's squad finished last season with an 18-11 record, the most wins in the history of the women's tennis program.
