Vikings Finish Strong At Bradley Invitational

PEORIA, Ill. - Senior Sarah Galon completed an unbeaten weekend at No. 1 singles and the Vikings went 5-1 in doubles play against Western Illinois and UW-Milwaukee on Sunday (Sept. 10) to complete the season-opening Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill.

 

Galon, a three-time All-Horizon League selection, made quick work of Western Illinois' Yana Meinert, 6-1, 6-0 to finish the weekend with a spotless 3-0 ledger. Freshmen Denisa Muntean and Charlotte Gibbons also recorded singles victories on Sunday against Western Illinois opponents. Muntean defeated WIU's Courtney Brooks, 6-3, 6-4, and Gibbons swept Jessica Drake, 6-0, 6-0.

 

"Our singles play was great," assistant coach David Howell said. "We were excited with the way all of our returning players competed and our freshmen got some of their first wins."

 

The 4, 5 and 6 part of the lineup took two of three against Southern Illinois and then lost, 3-0, to host Bradley. Junior Christine Vogelgesang was a bright spot in those contests, boasting a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Southern Illinois' Anne Tilton.

 

CSU dominated doubles play, sweeping Western Illinois, 3-0, and taking two of three against league foe UW-Milwaukee. Galon and senior Morgan Ungerott are off to a 3-0 start at No. 1 doubles after picking up two victories on Sunday. The senior Vikings won over Brooks and Meinert of Western Illinois, 8-2, and then defeated Kastenholz and Clark of UWM, 8-6.  

 

The women's tennis team returns to action next Saturday (Sept. 16) at the Bowling Green Invitational. The tournament will go all weekend.
