Vikings Down Detroit, 4-2, for Fifth Place Finish

Indianapolis, Ind.-The Cleveland State women's tennis team defeated the University of Detroit Mercy, 4-2, in the fifth-place match of the Horizon League Tournament Sunday morning.

The Vikings, who finished the regular season 4-3 in conference play, were led throughout the weekend by Christine Vogelgesang who secured wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Vogelgesang and Jenn Myers downed Amy Inman and Sarah Hill 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. At the No. 1 spot Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott topped Annie Moore and Kelly Davis 8-3.

With the early 1-0 lead CSU won three of the five singles matches. No. 2 Myers defeated Aneta Maricevic 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 3 position Ungerott topped Ashley Cummins 6-2, 6-3. For the winning point, No. 6 Vogelgesand knocked off Hill 0-6 7-6, 6-4.

"Christine played the best tennis she's ever played," said coach Brian Etzkin. "She gave us the clinching point. It has been an excellent day and an excellent tournament for her."

"We were not necessarily happy to be playing in the bottom half of the draw today but I think this win is a testament to our will and determination," said Etzkin. "The women fought through injuries towards the end of the season and to come back from yesterday's loss in the quarterfinals and win says a lot about their will."
