INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team moved into second place in the Horizon League with a 6-1 win at Butler on Sunday afternoon.
The win improved the Vikings to 10-11 overall and 5-1 in league play.
"This was a great team win for us and it was nice to be in control of things right from the get-go," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I thought we played some of our best doubles of the season today and getting that point really allowed us to take some momentum to singles where we capitalized.
"It's great to be able to move into second place in the league and know that we control our own destiny for a first round bye in the league tournament. But we know that it won't come easy with two big matches to conclude the regular season next weekend. So we have to stay focused at practice this week, continue to get better and play with the same level of intensity that we have played with lately."
The Vikings won the doubles point today with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles by Maria Lazaris and Catrine Bjerrehus, while Mengdi Liu and Kara Sherwood won at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
Sherwood (No. 3), Lazaris (No. 4), Alex Power (No. 5) and Liu (No. 6) all won their singles matches in straight sets, while Bjerrehus won a super-tiebreaker at No. 1.
The Vikings are back in action on Friday (April 15) when CSU plays at Youngstown State at 7:00 p.m. in its final regular season road match.
