Women's Tennis Claims All-Time Winning Record

April 8, 2006

Cleveland, OH-The Cleveland State women's tennis improved to 15-9 on the season Saturday evening with a 4-0 victory over conference foe UW-Green Bay. The Vikings now hold the record for most wins in CSU history. The previous record of 14 wins was set in 2005.

The women were on fire from the start, claiming two of three doubles matches. Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott began the evening with an 8-3 victory over Heather Harding and Aschley Jurgella at No. 1 doubles. Not far behind, No. 3 Jenn Myers and Christine Vogelgesang knocked off Kari Petroshek and Kristin Leeder 8-4.

Cleveland State maintained its momentum throughout singles play with No. 1 Galon quickly putting the Vikings up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jennifer Tan.

"Sarah played excellent tennis today," said coach Brian Etzkin. "She saw ways to control the point and did just that."

Minutes later Ungerott secured a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jurgella at No. 3 singles. On a four-match winning streak, Ungerott improved to 16-13 on the season. Lastly, No. 2 Myers fought through a tough first set to knock off Harding 6-4, 6-0 and clinch the CSU victory. Myers improved to 20-10 on the season.

"Jenn had a pretty good mental test because Harding normally plays at the No. 1 spot and today she played at the No.2 spot," said Etzkin. "Last year was a close 4-3 match so we were happy to get the quick doubles point and just take care of business in the top three singles spots."

With the CSU victory in hand and due to a late start, the No. 4, 5 and 6 matches were cut short.

The women's team returns to action tomorrow (Apr. 9) at 10:30 when they host UW-Milwaukee at the Malaga Tennis Center on the CSU campus.
