Men's and Women's Tennis Falls to Butler

April 2, 2006

Indianapolis, Ind.-The Cleveland State men's and women's tennis teams came up short against a hard-hitting Butler Sunday afternoon, losing 7-0 and 6-1 respectively.

The women struggled from the start with the No. 1 team of Morgan Ungerott and Sarah Galon falling 8-6 to Alaina Griffin and Kaitlin Elliliott in the closest doubles match. No. 2 Lindsay Sellers and Kristin Chamberlain lost 8-2 and No. 3 Jenn Myers and Christine Vogelgesang were defeated 8-6.

In singles play Ungerott claimed the Viking's lone victory of the day, downing Shaden Dowiatt 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. No. 5 Kristin Chamberlain lost a close 6-4, 4-6 (10-8) match to Carrie Rachon.

"We were so close in so many spots I really feel like this our team can get to the point where we come out and beat a team of this level," said coach Brian Etzkin. "The doubles points especially were really close."

The men also struggled to secure points against Butler, falling to the Bulldogs 7-0. The Vikings lost all three doubles matches 8-2.

"Butler came out and played really good doubles," said Etzkin. "They were all over us and we couldn't get our feet set."

In singles action CSU went 0-6. Dhaine fell to Gill 6-0, 5-7 (13-11) in the closest match of the day. The Vikings lost the remaining five matches in two sets.

"Olivier competed well especially after we moved inside," said Etzkin. "But it was definitely not enough to get the job done today. Most of Butler's guys are big guys with big serves and it was a game of who was going to break who."

The men return to action Apr. 8-9 when they host Robert Morris and Youngstown State. The women will host UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee.
