ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team moved back above .500 for the season with a pair of wins on Sunday at River Oaks Racquet Club. The Vikings opened the day with a 6-1 victory over league foe Milwaukee and followed that up with a 7-0 triumph over Case Western.
The wins improved CSU to 11-10 overall this season and ran its win streak to four straight, while the win over UWM kept the Vikings perfect in Horizon League play at 3-0.
"We had two great wins today and have continued to improve each time we take the court this spring," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Milwaukee is a very good team and can really sneak up on you if you lose focus. But I thought we did a great job of controlling the match and never really let it slip away."
The No. 1 doubles team of Catrine Bjerrehus and Charlotte Gibbons ran their win streak to 10 straight with two more wins today. The duo won 8-4 against Milwaukee and 8-2 against CWRU.
Maria Lazaris and Nicole Janek also won both of their doubles matches at the No. 2 position.
"Getting the doubles point against Milwaukee was a huge boost and really gave us the confidence going into singles," Etzkin said. "And the middle of our order took care of business, getting us to four points."
Bjerrehus (No. 1), Lazaris (No. 2), Gibbons (No. 3), Janek (No. 4) and Liu (No. 6) all won both of their singles matches.
Gibbons has won five consecutive singles contests, while Lazaris won her 16th and 17th singles matches of the season, tops on the team.
The Vikings will be back in action with two matches next weekend, beginning with a 1:00 p.m. match at Valparaiso on Saturday (April 3). CSU then heads to UIC for an 11:00 a.m. match on Sunday, April 4.
