ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - Cleveland State's No. 1 doubles team of Catrine Bjerrehus and Charlotte Gibbons won their eighth straight match, helping the Vikings to a 6-1 victory over Green Bay in Horizon League action on Saturday morning at River Oaks Racquet Club.
The win improves CSU to 9-10 overall and 2-0 in league action.
"I was happy with the win and how we played today," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We went out and took care of business in doubles and carried that momentum over to our singles play. We have been playing some very good doubles over the last few weeks and getting that point is always key."
Bjerrehus and Gibbons combined for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, picking up their eighth straight victory.
"I have been really impressed with the way they have been playing during this streak," Etzkin said. "They are a very balanced team and feeding off of each other on the court."
Maria Lazaris and Nicole Janek earned an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while Sanda Bjelan and Mengdi Liu won at the No. 3 slot, 8-4.
The Vikings went on to win five of the six singles matches, including a 6-3, 6-3 win by Bjerrehus at No. 1 singles.
Lazaris won her team-leading 15th match of the season, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2, while Gibbons moved up a spot in the lineup and picked up a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.
Janek won at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1) and Bjelan won at the No. 5 position (6-3, 6-4).
"This was a big match for us to win and I expect us to come out tomorrow with the same type of intensity," Etzkin said.
The Vikings have two matches on Sunday (March 28), beginning with a 10:00 a.m. match against Milwaukee at River Oaks Racquet Club. CSU will also host Case Western at 2:00 p.m.
