Vikings Fall to Duquesne, 7-0

March 23, 2006

Pittsburgh, PA-Strong doubles play was not enough for the Cleveland State women's tennis team Thursday afternoon as a hard-hitting Duquesne shut out the Vikings, 7-0.

The Vikings put forth a solid effort in doubles action with No. 3 Jenn Myers and Christine Vogelgesang downing Abigail Ball and Alexandria Albano, 8-3. The duo improve to 12-6 on the season. At No. 1 doubles, Morgan Ungerott and Sarah Galon fell just short of a victory over Jacqueline Hughes and Rebecca Poole, 9-8 (7-2).

"The highlight of the day was definitely No. 3 doubles," said coach Brian Etzkin. "They came out and played really well...very aggressive."

CSU was less successful in singles, losing all six of their matches. No. 1 Galon fell to Johanna Bezjak in the closest match of the day, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. In similar fashion, Albano edged out Vogelgesang at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 1-6, 10-5.

" We played some really good tennis in spots but we got beaten by a better team," said Etzkin. "We almost had the doubles point and we haven't lost that in a while. It was a really good reality check to remind us that not every match will be an easy victory."

Next up the women will travel to Detroit on Saturday, Mar. 25.

"We really needed this match before playing Detroit indoors this weekend," said Etzkin. "We will be ready for them."
