DETROIT, Mich. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team dropped its Horizon League opener, falling to Detroit, 4-3. The loss drops the team to 0-1 (HL) and 11-5 for the season.
After winning two doubles matches to claim the doubles point and winning the first two singles matches played, CSU lost the remaining four matches.
Freshman Charlotte Gibbons and senior Morgan Ungerott won at No. 2 doubles, defeating Annie Aneta Maricevic and Zeljka Minic, 8-5. Freshmen Melissa Holzinger and Jackie Tabb won over Stephanie Hill and Svetlana Flankova, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
Sophomores Gibbons and Denisa Muntean won the two singles matches for the Vikings. Gibbons won 6-3, 6-3 over Erin Weldon at No. 5 singles, while Muntean defeated Stephanie Hill, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
"We had some good leads early in the doubles matches to claim the doubles point," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Gibbons and Muntean got us up 3-0, and we had the first set in two other matches, but could not find a way to close it out. We had three freshman playing upperclassmen and their experience paid off."
The Vikings host Youngstown State on Sunday, March 30 at 12:00 p.m.
