Orlando, Fla.With a little bit of sunshine and a whole lot of heads-up play, the Cleveland State women's tennis team went 2-0 on its second day of spring training, downing Fairfield University 7-0 and Hamilton College 6-1 Monday evening. The men's team marked its first day of competition with a 6-1 win over Fairfield.
The women dominated the court early on against Fairfield, winning all three doubles matches and allowing just three Fairfield points. Lindsay Sellers and Kristin Chamberlain shut out the Stags, 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.
CSU continued to dominate Fairfield in singles play, winning all six matches. Five of the matches were claimed in two sets. No. 3 Sellers downed Megan Stauffer in the only three-set match, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
"Lindsay Sellers played especially well considering she had blisters on her feet today and had to pull through a long three-set match," said coach Brian Etzkin. All of the girls played well. Before we came here we figured the match could go either way so we're happy to come away with the win."
The women also came away with a 6-1 win against Hamilton College Monday evening. After securing the doubles point with a 9-7 at No. 1 doubles and an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, the Vikings went on to win five of their six singles matches.
No. 1 Galon downed Sarah Coleman in the only three-set match of the evening, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. She is now 13-10 for the year. No. 2 Myers defeated Kara Powers 6-1, 6-4, while No. 4 Ungerott shut out Julia Houlden, 6-0, 6-0. No. 5 Chamberlain won 6-2, 6-4 and No. 6 Vogelgesang won 6-4, 6-0.
"We're not used to playing outdoor double headers and this team made us play a lot of ball," said Etzkin. "They made us work on constructing points and being patient. It was a great match for us to work on focusing and keeping balls in play."
In men's tennis action, Cleveland State improved to 5-7 for the year thanks to a 6-1 win over Fairfield. Persistence paid off for the Vikings who fought through three tough matches to sweep the doubles point and claim the early lead.
"We started slow in doubles but everyone found their stride and got back into the matches before it was too late," said Etzkin.
The duo of Olivier Dhaine and Jay Tee started the day with a close 9-8 (4) victory over Jonathan Fernando and Glen Gannon at No. 1 doubles. No. 2 Rob West and Dan Singer, and No. 3 Brad Groleski and Steven Wipprecht both downed their opponents 8-6.
With the doubles point in hand CSU went on to win five of their six singles matches. No. 4 Groleski defeated Zachary Morrison 6-1, 6-1. Balazs Szikla fell to Dan Singer 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. On a four-match winning streak, No. 1 Dhaine improved to 7-1 for the year with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win over Jonathan Fernando.
"Fairfeld is a team we beat a few years ago but in a very tightly contested match," said Etzkin. "Today we won the close matches and that was big. Singer and Groleski at four and five got us two quick points followed by Olivier Dhaine getting the clinching point."
Senior Jay Tee broke out of a recent slump, defeating Michael Palumbo 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) at No. 3 singles.
The men continue spring training on Tuesday (Mar. 14) when they battle Binghamton University at 4:00p.m. The women play Wagner College at noon.
