Youngstown Knocks off Cleveland State, 4-3

March 5, 2006

Cleveland, Ohio- The Cleveland State women's tennis team suffered an emotional 4-3 loss to Youngstown Sunday evening in its first conference match of the spring.

The Vikings got off to a strong start with Lindsay Sellers and Kristin Chamberlain claiming an early 8-3 victory over Andrea Dixon and Nicole Haralambopoulos at No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 doubles unit of Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott clinched the doubles point with their 8-3 win over Gina Peretti and Emily Thayer, improving to 12-5 for the year.

"We got off to a great start at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles," said coach Brian Etzkin. "I think Sellers and Chamberlain played their best match of the year."

Galon continued to play well at No. 1 singles, downing Whitney Thomas 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. No. 2 Jenn Myers claimed the only other win of the day with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (2) win over Thayer, improving to 14-7 for the year.

"In singles we won where we needed to at No. 1 and 2 but couldn't pull out a win in the middle of the lineup," said Etzkin. "Galon did an excellent job of coming back mentally after being down in her first set and Myers fought off two match points to keep us in the match and get a win."

The women's team travels to Orlando, Fla. for spring training before returning to its regular schedule on Mar. 23 when it takes on Duquesne.
