CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The CSU women had enough of the right stuff to come out with a 5-1 win against St. Bonaventure in a battle of the shorthanded lineups Sunday afternoon.
Both teams were without their full squads and as a result, there was a possibility that the match could have ended in a tie. The Vikings made sure that was nothing more than a possibility, though, as they improved their record to 3-2 with the win.
Cleveland State took the doubles point by winning the only two doubles matches of the day since there were no third doubles teams.
"It was key for us to come out and get both of those doubles matches, " said CSU head coach Brian Etzkin. "We couldn't afford to split those since there were only two. Overall I thought we played very well in doubles today."
The Vikings went on to win four out of the five singles matches that were played. Sophomore Myra Pepino defeated Ana Delgado in straight sets at the third spot, bringing Pepino's individual record to 3-0 over the last three matches.
"Myra has been playing some of her best tennis, which is definitely going to pay off for her later on in the season," Etzkin said.
Catrine Bjerrehus struggled at her No. 1 position, falling in three sets to Manuela Marin-Salcedo.
"Catrine stumbled a bit in her match, but I felt confident in her game," said Etzkin. "It was encouraging to see how she improved her game throughout the course of the match.
"We came out very aggressive right away and dominated the net today which sparked our success. After a couple tough matches, it is good to see us starting the spring off on a higher note."
CSU will have a week off before hosting another doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 7. The women will play Niagara at 1:00 p.m. and Robert Morris at 6:00 p.m.
