CHICAGO, Ill. -- The CSU women's tennis team dropped its second contest of the 2009 season, falling to No. 62 ranked DePaul at the Lakeshore Athletic Center Sunday afternoon.
The Vikings were defeated in straight sets in all singles flights, despite competitive efforts from Sanda Bjelan and Catrine Bjerrehus. The pair also played a strong doubles match at the No. 1 spot but was defeated by Dunja Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell.
"There are not too many times this season when we will judge our performance by counting the number of games we won," CSU head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Even though we got beat pretty badly this weekend, the numbers are not completely indicative of how we played. We are still able to take some positives away from these matches and turn them into learning experiences.
"Sanda and Catrine are playing some of their best tennis right now, and those who have been injured looked stronger and healthier today which is encouraging for the near future."
CSU saw changes in its starting lineup over the course of the weekend because of players with recovering injuries, but Coach Etzkin is looking forward to their upcoming return to health.
"Judging from this first weekend, we have a lot of work to do as a team," he said. "It is very early in the season and we are looking to improve in every way we can in order to prepare for the next two weeks homestand."
Etzkin and the Viking women will remain in Cleveland until mid-February. The team's next match is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, when it will host Saint Francis (Pa) and Case Western Reserve. Play begins at noon.
