PERRYSBURG, Ohio - Cleveland State dropped a 7-0 decision at Bowling Green in the first match of the 2009 spring season on Friday night at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
It was the first match at BGSU's new indoor tennis facility.
The Falcons swept the doubles point, that included a pair of tightly contested matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Kelsey Jakupcin teamed with Christine Chiricosta to pick up an 8-6 win at the top flight over CSU's Sanda Bjelan and Catrine Bjerrehus.
At the second flight, Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel topped Melissa Holzinger and Jackie Tabb, in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (3).
"We were really excited to open up at Bowling Green this year, since it was a team we have not played before," said CSU head coach Brian Etzkin. "Unfortunately, our lineup was a bit too depleted to get the win, with three starters out of the lineup."
CSU was forced to forfeit at the No. 6 singles spot due to the shorthanded lineup.
Bjerrehus had a close match at No. 1 singles with Jakupcin, losing 7-6 (5), 7-5.
"We knew this was going to be a tough road trip going into this weekend," Etzkin said. "Hopefully we can get healthy soon and continue to compete."
The Vikings will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 25, when CSU heads to DePaul, the No. 62 team in the nation, for a 1:00 p.m. match.
