Shorthanded Women’s Tennis Comes Up Short In #HLTennis Semifinals

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team closed out the 2022 spring campaign Saturday, as the shorthanded Vikings dropped a 4-1 match in the Horizon League semifinals. The Vikings finished the season with a 13-11 overall record, including the team's first-ever undefeated slate in #HLTennis regular season matches that led to a Regular Season Championship.

Cleveland State was making its 15th appearance in the Horizon League semifinals and its 11th straight trip.

"I'm so proud of this team, they were up against an extremely tough situation and they competed hard and did a great job of staying focused throughout the match," head coach Frank Polito said. "Despite being shorthanded, we still battled and I'm so proud of the effort, the fight and the attitude that the team had today. More than today's match, I'm so proud of what this team accomplished this season."

Bethany Yauch put the lone point on the board for the Vikings, picking up a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. The win marked her team-leading 24th singles win of the season.

The Vikings, who were playing with just four players in the semifinal contest, had to forfeit matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 and No. 6 singles, while the Panthers also picked up wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 2 singles to claim the 4-1 victory.

In addition to Yauch, Tereze Vevere and Oihane Vicario also finished the year with 20+ singles wins, as both Vevere and Vicario ended their freshmen campaigns right on the number.
