YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team recorded its first undefeated Horizon League slate in program history Saturday afternoon, picking up a 5-2 victory at Youngstown State to clinch the 2022 Horizon League Regular Season title. With the win, the Vikings now stand at 13-10 overall this season and posted a 6-0 record in league matches.
This marks Cleveland State's fifth Horizon League Regular Season title, and first since the 2019 spring campaign.
After dropping the doubles point, the Vikings were able to quickly even the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win from Oihane Vicario at the top of the lineup. The win marked Vicario's 20th singles win of the season, while she finished regular season matches with a 4-1 record against league opponents at No. 1 singles.
The Vikings were then able to gain a 2-1 advantage following a 6-4, 6-2 win from Klara Mrcela at No. 2 singles – a win that capped off a perfect 5-0 mark in Horizon League singles matches for the senior.
Although Youngstown State was able to pick up a win at No. 4 singles, the Vikings responded with a 6-4, 7-5 win from Bethany Yauch at the No. 6 spot, before Tereze Vevere clinched the match for the Vikings at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4) victory.
Yauch and Vevere both improved to 5-0 against league opponents this season, while Yauch picked up her team-leading 23rd singles win of the season and Vevere notched her 20th singles win of the year.
The Vikings were then able to put the final point on the board at No. 3 singles, as Sima Heren earned a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win to give the Vikings the 5-2 victory. With the win, Heren improved to 4-1 against league opponents this spring.
Cleveland State will now be the No. 1 seed in next week's Horizon League Tournament, with action beginning with a semifinal contest on Saturday, April 30.
