CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team closed out its first home weekend of the 2022 spring campaign Sunday, dropping a 7-0 match against West Virginia. This marked Cleveland State's first loss of the season, as the Vikings are now 3-1 on the year.
"This was a tough match for us today, the team fought hard until the end, but they were just worn out mentally and physically after a hard weekend of tennis," head coach Frank Polito said. "We definitely had our chances in doubles – which is something that we have been doing a great job of so far this season – while Oihane continued to play some solid tennis at the top of the singles lineup for us."
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Vikings picked up a win at the No. 2 spot and had chances to clinch the point at the top of the lineup. At No. 2 doubles Selma Tounsi and Bethany Yauch came away with a 6-3 victory, while Cleveland State's top team of Sima Heren and Klara Mrcela came up short in a 7-6(3) tiebreak decision.
With the win at No. 2 doubles, Tounsi and Yauch improved to 4-0 on the spring.
In singles, Oihane Vicario forced her match to three sets, after bouncing back to win the second set before coming up short in a super-tiebreaker third set.
Cleveland State will split its time at home and on the road next week, traveling to Eastern Michigan on Friday, February 4 and hosting Duquesne on Sunday, February 6.
