Women’s Tennis Has Success On First Day Of Akron Shootout

AKRON, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team kicked off the 2017-18 season Friday, picking up wins in six of their nine matches on the first day of the Akron Shootout.

"This was a good first day of matches for us, we played some great doubles and everyone competed really well during their singles matches," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "I was very impressed with the upperclassmen – they really took control of the team and led the way on and off the court. Anastasia and Gaby both played really well in their first collegiate singles matches, but unfortunately came up just a bit short. This was definitely a good starting point for the season, and hopefully we will be able to improve throughout the weekend."

In singles play, the Vikings split their matches, picking up wins at the top three spots in the lineup. At No. 1 singles, Isabella Spindler picked up a 6-0, 6-3 victory, while Aleksandra Golawska earned a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win at the No. 2 spot, and Jana Schober posted a 0-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7) at No. 3 singles.

Cleveland State then swept all three of its doubles matches on the opening day of the weekend, including a pair of 6-2 victories at the top two spots. Golawska and Schober teamed up for the 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while Spindler and Gaby Schoenberg earned the 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot.

At No. 3 doubles, Blanche Lenoan and Anastasia Perin teamed up for a 6-3 victory.  

The Vikings will continue play at the Akron Shootout tomorrow (Saturday, September 23), with one round of singles and one round of doubles beginning at 10:00 a.m.
