CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team kept its record perfect in Horizon League play Saturday afternoon, picking up a 6-1 victory over Oakland to improve to 11-8 overall this season and 5-0 in league action. The victory also extended Cleveland State's current winstreak to six straight matches.
With Saturday's 6-1 victory, the Vikings now own a 15-1 record against the Grizzlies under head coach Brian Etzkin.
"This was a good solid team match today, we have been playing good tennis throughout the doubles and singles lineup and I am happy to see that continuing throughout league play," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "We started out well in doubles today and we were able to continue that momentum through singles play. Now we have a quick turnaround for Detroit tomorrow and another tough match against a strong league opponent."
For the fourth time during Horizon League play the Vikings picked up the first point of the match, earning wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to secure the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. At the top of the lineup, Jana Schober and Victoria Bensimon notched a 6-1 victory, while Isabella Spindler and Princess Gbadamosi earned a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
With the win at No. 2 doubles, Gbadamosi moved into a tie for ninth place on the CSU Doubles Wins List, now owning 55 career doubles wins.
Cleveland State's first singles win of the day came from Spindler at the top of the lineup, as she earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory, evening her record at No. 1 singles to 8-8 on the year.
The Vikings then extended their lead to 3-0 following a 6-4, 6-1 victory from Gbadamosi at the No. 4 spot, as she improved to 4-1 against league opponents this season. The win also marked the 66th of Gbadamosi's career, putting her just four wins shy of joining the 70-win club.
Cleveland State's clinching point came from Aleksandra Golawska at No. 3 singles then, as she earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory, marking the 49th singles win of her career. Golawska is now 4-1 in league play this season, while she stands at 15-11 overall.
Although Oakland was able to get on the board with a win at No. 5 singles, the Vikings responded with a 6-4, 7-5 victory from Bensimon at the No. 2 spot. The win kept Bensimon perfect in Horizon League play this season, owning a 5-0 record, while it also gave her a team-best 18-12 record this season. The win also marked the 72nd of her career, moving her into a tie for third place on the CSU Singles Wins List.
Bensimon now stands at 26-2 against league opponents in regular season matches, and has won 18 straight league singles matches.
The final singles point came from Blanche Lenoan at the No. 6 spot, as she battled for a 6-4, 7-6 (7) victory, giving her a 4-1 record against league opponents this season.
Cleveland State will wrap up its final homestand tomorrow (Sunday, April 9), hosting Detroit Mercy at 2:00 p.m. in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
