CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team continued its fall season Friday, hosting the opening day of the Viking Invitational.

"So far it has been fun to host our first-ever home invitational at the MMTP, and I think the team is really enjoying playing at their home courts during the fall season," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I thought our doubles looked like they were progressing throughout the day, and I thought we looked pretty sharp in matches that we both won and lost. We have been using a lot of different combinations, and it is fun to see everyone working together."

Aleksandra Golawska led the Vikings on the first day of the tournament, as she was undefeated in singles and doubles play. In singles action, Golawska picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Megan Wasson of Duquesne, while she teamed with Isabella Spindler for a pair of doubles wins on the day.

Golawska and Spindler picked up doubles wins against West Virginia and Akron, earning a 6-3 win against the Mountaineers and a 6-2 victory against the Zips.

The Viking tandem of Jana Schober and Blanche Lenoan also posted a doubles win on Friday, as they notched a 6-4 victory over a pair from Akron.

Schober was also victorious in singles play, as she earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Duquesne's Ally Miller.

"In singles, we faced a team in Duquesne that we will be seeing during the regular season, so it was good to see how we compare against them early on. Aleksandra was definitely the highlight of the day, picking up wins in singles and doubles action. Jana also had a great day in singles, and she is playing some of her best tennis right now, which is great to see her get off to a nice start this year," Etzkin said.        

The Viking Invitational will continue tomorrow (Saturday, October 8), with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
