CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team got back on the winning track Sunday afternoon, picking up a 7-0 victory over Green Bay. The Vikings are now 12-8 overall this season and 6-1 in Horizon League play.
"This was a very good team win for us today, Green Bay was scrappy and tenacious, and they definitely came here to compete," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I'm glad to see that we were able to stay focused throughout the entire match and competed hard until the very end. We are excited that we control our own destiny for the top seed in the tournament still, and we will prepare diligently this week and be ready for the Flames in our next matchup."
After dropping the doubles point for the first time against a league opponent yesterday, the Vikings rebounded against the Phoenix, getting out to the early 1-0 advantage. Cleveland State was able to pick up matching 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, with Isabella Spindler and Aleksandra Golawska teaming up at the top spot and Princess Gbadamosi and Mathilde Orange claiming the win at the No. 2 spot.
The Vikings then went on to sweep all six singles matches, including five straight-set victories.
Orange picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory on senior day, marking her 14th singles victory overall this season. The win also gave her 53 for her career, and she is now just two wins shy of cracking the top-10 on the CSU Singles Wins list.
Victoria Bensimon extended her personal winstreak to nine straight singles matches on Sunday, as she battled for a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (5) at the No. 4 spot. She now stands at 11-9 this spring, and owns a perfect 7-0 record against league opponents this season.
Gbadamosi got back in the win column Sunday, posting a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. She now has 48 career singles wins – just two wins shy of becoming the 14th Viking all-time to notch 50 career singles victories.
Golawska improved to 6-1 against league opponents against the Phoenix, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 5 spot. She is now 12-7 this spring and stands at 14-10 overall this year.
The final singles point came from Morgan Nix at the No. 6 spot, as she picked up her first league singles win of the season in a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
Cleveland State will close out the regular season on the road next weekend, traveling to UIC (Saturday, April 23) and Valparaiso (Sunday, April 24).
