Women’s Tennis Continues Play Against Akron & IPFW

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team will continue its spring season this weekend, splitting time at home and on the road for the second straight weekend. The Vikings will open play with a 2:00 p.m. contest at Akron on Friday (Feb. 20), and will then host IPFW at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 22).

Vikings Pick Up First Win
The Vikings picked up their first win of the 2015 spring season last weekend, capturing a 5-2 victory at Bowling Green. Cleveland State picked up the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, before earning singles wins at No. 1, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles. Posting singles wins against Bowling Green for the Vikings were Victoria Bensimon (No. 1), Ellen Folkers (No. 4), Princess Gbadamosi (No. 5), and Aleksandra Golawska (No. 6).

Bensimon Moves To No. 1 Singles
Sophomore Victoria Benismon moved into the top spot in the singles lineup last weekend, posting a 1-1 record against Bowling Green and Ball State. Bensimon picked up a 3-6, 7-5, 11-9 victory against the Falcons and dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision against the Cardinals. For the season, Bensimon owns an 11-6 singles record, including a team-best 4-3 mark this spring.

Folkers Goes 2-0 In Singles
Ellen Folkers picked up wins in both of her singles matches last weekend, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles against Bowling Green and a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot against Ball State. Folkers has a team-best 12-4 singles record so far this season, including a 4-3 mark during dual match play.

Scouting the Zips
Akron enters the weekend with a 5-4 record this spring, with three of its wins coming against Horizon League teams (Valparaiso, Oakland, Youngstown State). Three different Zips have spent time at the top of the singles lineup this spring, while they have also had three different doubles tandems play at No. 1 doubles.

This will be the 10th meeting between the two teams during head coach Brian Etzkin's tenure, with Akron owning a 6-3 record in the overall series.

Scouting the Mastodons
IPFW enters the weekend with a 7-4 record this spring, including a 2-1 mark against Horizon League opponents. Mayu Sato has a team-best 16-6 singles record this season, including an 8-3 mark at No. 1 singles. Sato is also part of IPFW's top doubles team, playing with Marcy Huck to post a 15-6 overall doubles record this year and a 7-4 mark this spring.

This will be the 18th meeting between the two teams over the past 13 seasons, with the Vikings owning a slight 9-8 advantage in the overall series. CSU has won three straight against the Mastodons entering the weekend.
