Vikings Host Walsh; Travel To WSU In Regular Season Finale

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team will wrap up the regular season this weekend, hosting Walsh and traveling to Wright State. The Vikings will begin the weekend against Walsh, hosting the Cavaliers at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19, and will then face Wright State at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 21.

Against Walsh: This will be the first meeting between CSU and Walsh under head coach Brian Etzkin - with the Cavaliers entering the weekend with a 4-18 overall record. Walsh's last victory came as a 7-2 decision against Edinboro in late February.

***This match is scheduled to be played at Paramount Tennis Club in Westlake, Ohio. Singles competition will begin at 3:00 p.m. with doubles to follow.

Against Wright State: CSU is 9-2 against the Raiders over the past 10 seasons, and has won seven straight against WSU heading into Sunday's contest. Wright State is 7-14 overall this year and 2-3 in league play, and will face Youngstown State prior to Sunday's contest.

***This match will be played on the Wright State University Campus at 10:00 a.m. In case of inclement weather, match will be moved indoors to the South Regency Tennis Center.

The Vikings currently stand at 10-10 on the season and 4-2 in league play, after splitting their matches against UIC and Valparaiso last weekend. CSU is currently in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings and needs a win on Sunday to clinch the No. 3 seed in the Horizon League Tournament (April 26-28).

For the first time since the 2008-09 season the Vikings were able to earn the doubles point against the Flames last weekend, picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Entering Friday's match the No. 1 doubles team of Alex Bush and Kara Sherwood and the No. 2 doubles team of Alex Power and Maria Lazaris are on three-match win streaks - with Bush and Sherwood standing at 9-9 this season and Power and Lazaris owning an 8-8 record. 

 
 
 


Entering the final stretch of the regular season, four Vikings are ranked in the top-10 on the all-time singles wins list at CSU, led by Lazaris who sits fourth with 67 career victories. Janek is close behind in fifth with 66 career wins, while Sherwood ranks eighth (54 wins) and Power ranks 10th (50 wins). Lazaris, Janek and Sherwood all have a team-high 11 wins this spring - with Lazaris and Janek both owning a 5-1 league record.
