CLEVELAND, Ohio - Jamie Puls and Joanna Olsson have both signed National Letters of Intent to join the Cleveland State women's swimming and diving programs beginning with the 2009-10 school year.
Director of Competitive Aquatics Wally Morton made the announcement on Thursday (Dec. 10) afternoon.
Puls, a native of Parma, Ohio, holds the Normandy H.S. record in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle, as well as the 100 butterfly. A district qualifier last season, he is also part of the school-record holding 400 free relay team. Puls has been a member of the National Honor Society for the last two years, earning the "Highest Honors" with a 4.0 grade point average each semester.
"We feel that Jamie is one of the best local swimmers in the area, especially in the sprints and 100 fly," Morton said. "She is really capable of swimming any of the events and we feel that she will make great contributions to our program. In addition to being a great swimmer, she is an outstanding student in the classroom and we would like to welcome her to the Viking family."
Olsson, who hails from Stockholm, Sweden, is the Swedish Junior National record holder in the 800 freestyle relay which she set last week. She placed fifth at the Swedish Nationals in the 800 freestyle and was a finalist in the 400 freestyle.
"Joanna represents one of the finest swimmers that we have ever signed at Cleveland State," Morton said. "Her strengths lie in the middle distance and distance events and we feel that she is capable of being one of the top swimmers in the Horizon League. We are extremely excited about adding another quality swimmer to our ever improving women's program."
The Vikings have completed their schedule for the 2008 calendar year and will be back in action when CSU heads to Florida for its annual Holiday Meet on Jan. 3.
