The Cleveland State women's swim team hosted the City College Championship on Nov. 11, facing off against Gannon University, John Carroll University and Notre Dame College. The Vikings swept the three teams, picking up a 141-91 win over Gannon, a 182.5-38.5 victory over John Carroll and knocked off Notre Dame College by a margin of 178-54. With the wins, the Vikings improve their dual record to 6-4.
"I am very pleased with our effort and our performances tonight," head coach Wally Morton said. "It was a total team effort. Gannon is a team we lost to last year and we had a solid victory against them this time around because of our depth, the discipline of the team and their will to win."
Kacey Cummings got things started off right for the Vikings, winning both of the diving events. She led the field of six competitors with a score of 241.05 in the 1-meter competition and recorded a score of 266.85 in the 3-meter event.
In the swimming events, CSU opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Maria Culjak, Rachel Arzadon, Emily Splain and Brittany Tweardy finished in 1:53.13.
The 200 freestyle went to Emily Splain, who won two events on the night. Splain swam a 1:57.86 in the 200 freestyle win and also scored a victory with her 1:02.06 in the 100 backstroke, edging out Culjak (1:02.85).
Carys Behn also recorded two individual wins. She took the 50 freestyle in 24.83, edging out Tweardy, and won the 100 butterfly in 59.25.
Rachel Arzadon swam a 1:09.27 in the 100 breaststroke earlier this season and matched that time for a win in the event at the City College Championship. The time ties CSU's best this season and is the ninth-fastest time in Vikings history. Katie Bellew finished third (1:11.63).
In the meet's final event, CSU paired Kristine Bunker, Behn, Kristina Nagy and Culjak in the 200 free relay. The group swam a season-best 1:40.85 for the win.
In the 1,000 freestyle, Kristine Bunker took second in a time of 11:08.14 and Frances Carrion was third (11:13.64). In the 200 IM, CSU finished second a third with Katie Bellew (2:19.37) and Arzadon (2:20.99), respectively.
The Vikings also recorded 2-3-4 finishes in the 100 freestyle behind the efforts of Bunker (55.49), Kristina Nagy (55.74) and Tweardy (56.10). Green (5:28.85) and Carrion (5:37.41) were the highest finishers for CSU in the 500 freestyle, finishing third and fourth, respectively.
The women's swimming and diving teams are off until Tuesday, Nov. 25 when they host Ohio State. The meet begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
