Men's Swimming Squad Tops Duquesne And Xavier

CLEVELAND - In double-dual competition today, the Cleveland State men's swim team defeated Duquesne University and Xavier University 137-71 and 129.5-84.5, respectively. On the women's side, Cleveland State fell to both Xavier (119-82) and Duquesne (103-98).

In his first appearance in front of the home crowd this afternoon, freshman Warren Vickers (Durban, South Africa/Durban) finished first in both the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.30) and the 100-yard freestyle (46.64). Another Viking newcomer, freshman Niall McGrane (Dublin, Ireland/St. Mary's Rathmines) swam a strong 1:57.35 in the 200 butterfly, finishing second behind sophomore teammate Andrew Hancock's (Sydney, Australia/St. Mary Senior) 1:55.85.

Despite the team loss, sophomore Jen Henshaw (Ft. Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake) dominated in the 400-yard IM (4:33.33) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.94) posting her best times of the year. Junior Audrey Gray (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) duplicated Henshaw's season-best performance, notching top times of 2:11.14 in the 200 backstroke and 1:57.90 in the 200 freestyle.

In today's other competitions, the Xavier men defeated Duquesne 129-73 while the Xavier women came away with a 131-89 victory over Duquesne.

The Cleveland State women take to the pool again on Tuesday, Jan. 23 when they travel to Youngstown State for a 6:00 p.m. match-up with the Penguins. The men are off until Saturday, Jan. 27 when both teams face Wright State and Illinois-Chicago in a double-dual meet.
