The Cleveland State University women's team returning from its week of training in Florida to host Xavier on Jan. 10. The meet was originally scheduled as a double dual, but Duquesne was unable to make the event due to poor weather conditions.
CSU freshman Carys Behn picked up three individual wins for the Vikings, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings fell 132-73 and moved their dual record to 6-6 on the season.
"I'm very pleased with the performances today. We did what we'd been working on all week during our training trip and today we got good swims and good efforts," head coach Wally Morton said. "After a week of intense training - nine days without a break - I thought we had a great day."
In the opening event, Maria Culjak, Rachel Arzadon, Katie Bellew and Brittany Tweardy paired up for the 200 medley relay, finishing second in 1:54.55. In the leadoff leg, Culjak swam her season best time in the 50 free.
CSU swam three athletes in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing 3-4-5. Erin Green led the way (11:05.21), followed by Frances Carrion (11:10.77) and Kristine Bunker (11:27.59).
The highlight of the day for the women was the performance of freshman Carys Behn. Behn won all three of the events she swam, despite the fatigue of the training trip.
"Carys won all three of her events despite being absolutely exhausted from training," head coach Wally Morton said. "But, she got up and gave a solid effort. She swam three tough events in a short amount of time and really held her own."
Behn picked up her first win in the 200 freestyle (1:54.59). In the 50 freestyle, Kristina Nagy posted CSU's best finish in 25.75 (4th). Katie Bellew, who swam her best time of the season, led the way with a third-place finish in the 200 IM (2:17.36).
The second win for the Vikings came in the 100 butterfly when Behn finished in 59.13. Whitney Hickey was within striking distance, finishing third in 1:01.33. Nagy also posted the team's best finish in the 100 freestyle, taking fourth in 56.83. CSU swimmers took two of the three podium spots in the 100 backstroke. Splain finished second (1:01.95) and Culjak swam her best time of the season to finish third (1:01.96).
Behn's final victory of the day came in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.37. Rachel Arzadon led a 3-4-5 finish for the Vikings in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.80) followed by Green (1:11.16) and Brittany McCann (1:14.99). In the day's final event, Nagy, Splain, Hickey and Kristine Bunker finished second in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Vikings return to the pool on Friday, Jan. 16 when the host Oakland at 5:00 p.m. in the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
