Cartwright Scores as CSU Concludes Action in NIC

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded their 2018-19 seasons Saturday as both programs hosted the final day of the National Invitational Championship inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

Five Viking swimmers competed Saturday in an individual and/or a relay event.

Sophomore Alana Cartwright scored in her lone event of the day. She placed 17th in the 100 IM in 58.25 seconds after posting a time of 57.70 in the prelims.

The CSU men also scored in their final event of the meet—the 400 freestyle relay. Sophomore Timothy Kubacki, junior Jack MacDonald and freshmen Mason Romstadt and Bob Lenart finished 15th in 3:04.18.

MacDonald and Romstadt also competed in the 100 freestyle Saturday, finishing in 45.98 and 46.64 seconds, respectively.

With the NCAA Zone diving meets concluding Saturday, divers' scores from those meets were then finalized and included as part of the NIC meet.

Sophomore Matt Akers placed second in 1-meter diving in the NIC with his 298.65 prelim score from the Zones meet. Senior Curtis Roden picked up 13th place in the 1-meter event for the Vikings (249.25). In the 3-meter event, Akers finished fifth and Roden took 12th among NIC competitors.

The CSU men, which had eight student-athletes' scores count in the meet, finished 18th in the NIC with 136 points.

The CSU women, earning points from its lone competitor Cartwright, finished 46th with four points.

This was the first time Cleveland State hosted the NIC, which crowns champions in more events than any other collegiate championship. The meet was the largest to date as nearly 60 schools entered teams into the event.
