Cleveland State Cruises Past Youngstown in Opening Dual

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State University women's swimming & diving team opened dual action Saturday afternoon by cruising past Horizon League foe Youngstown State, 198.5-98.5, at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

CSU won 13 of the 16 events contested Saturday. The Vikings swept the top three places in five swimming events.

Freshman Riley Drummond won three individual events and swam on a winning relay while senior Claudia Zido won two individual events and swam on both winning relays. Senior Maggie Stebick won her first event as a collegian by winning 1-meter diving with 216.08 points.

Drummond swept the backstroke events and also won the 200 IM. Drummond's first individual event was the 100 backstroke, which she won in 57.72 seconds. She then won the 200 back in 2:06.55. Junior Chuchu Yang was the runner-up in both backstroke events, finishing in 58.60 seconds and 2:07.94, while senior Michaela Bargardi was third in the 200 (2:10.37).

Drummond finished her day by winning the 200 IM by over two seconds as she touched the wall in 2:11.47.

Drummond and Zido swam the opening and closing legs of the victorious 200 medley relay while sophomores Gracyn McQueary and Alana Cartwright swam the middle legs. The quartet finished in 1:47.03.

Zido (first leg) and McQueary (third leg) also swam on the winning 200 free relay that finished in 1:39.03. Sophomore Irena Weclawiak and junior Madisyn Jaszcz swam the second and fourth legs, respectively.

Zido won the 100 free in 53.50 seconds and the 200 free in 1:56.85. Weclawiak was the runner-up in the 100 (54.04) while sophomore Maggie Hogsed and freshman Agnes Bahr took second (1:58.79) and third (1:59.30) in the 200.

Sophomore Lexie Kostelnik swept the distance freestyle events while classmate Libby Smith swept the breaststroke events.

Kostelnik won the 500 free in 5:15.36 and finished first in the 1000 in 10:43.96.  Weclawiak took third in the 1000 (10:48.80).

Cleveland State swept the top four positions in the 100 breaststroke. Smith won in 1:06.95 while McQueary (1:07.00), sophomore Shaw Barney (1:09.59) and senior Morgan Massie (1:09.65) followed behind her.

The Vikings similarly dominated the 200 breaststroke, taking the top three spots. Smith won in 2:25.76, McQueary was second (2:31.00) and Bahr was third (2:31.14).

Cartwright won the 100 butterfly in 59.19 seconds while Jaszcz finished second (1:00.35) and freshman Stephanie Sipple was third (1:01.12)

Sipple and Jaszcz were CSU's top finishers in the 200 butterfly (2:11.86) and 50 free (25.02), both taking runner-up positions.

Bahr and Cartwright tied for the third-fastest time in the 200 IM (2:13.67).

Sophomore Erica Henrichsen was second in 3-meter diving (224.33).

Cleveland State will remain at home next weekend as the men's and women's programs host Xavier Saturday, Oct. 27.
