Vikings Close Regular Season at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams closed their regular season Sunday on the second and final day of the Ohio State Winter Invitational inside the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

A limited number of Vikings took part with the meet taking place fewer than two weeks prior to the League meet. No team scores were kept at the event.

Freshman Shaw Barney was ninth of 22 competitors in the women's 200 IM in 2:11.14. She had posted a new season best in the prelims (2:10.31). Classmate Dana Bender was 12th in a season-best 2:10.44.

Barney and Bender were also CSU's best finishers in the 200 breaststroke and 200 backstroke, respectively. Barney shattered her career best by over three seconds, touching the wall in 2:25.87 to finish 12th. Bender was 11th in the back in 2:07.53.

Junior Kimberly Jimenez was 16th of 28 swimmers in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.99. Freshman Amelia Besterman was 19th in 1:58.85 after having set a new career best in the prelims (1:56.53).

Jimenez was also CSU's top finisher in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 25.00 seconds. Freshman Blaire Cain finished seventh in the 1650 freestyle in a new career best time of 18:12.87.

On the men's side, freshman Ryan Sedlak and sophomore Spencer Tretter both posted new career bests in the 50 freestyle. Sedlak was 14th in 21.59 seconds while Tretter was three spots behind in 22.03. Tretter had posted a time of 21.82 seconds in the prelims.

Sophomore Austin Spruill set season best times in the preliminaries in a pair of events Sunday. He was 10th in the 200 backstroke in 1:54.67 and was 12th in the 200 fly in 1:55.88. Freshmen Liam Halpin and Patrick Lance were right behind Spruill in the fly, finishing in 1:57.56 and 1:58.50, respectively.

In the 200 breaststroke junior Ryan Johnson led a contingent of three Vikings, finishing 13th in a season-best 2:06.71. Freshman Josh Hodges and Tretter then followed, as both shattered their prior personal bests in the event. Hodges finished in 2:08.93, after finishing in 2:07.29 in the prelims, while Tretter stopped the clock in 2:09.32.

Cleveland State will host the men's and women's Horizon League Championships Feb. 21-24.
