YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Cleveland State University women's swimming & diving team came up short to host Youngstown State, 167-129, in dual action between Horizon League opponents Friday evening inside Beeghly Natatorium.
Five Vikings won individual swimming events Friday—junior Ashleigh Bennett, sophomore Gabriella Marinelli, junior Molly McNamara, freshman Gracyn McQueary and junior Cassandra Oltman.
Bennett won the 200 backstroke in 2:07.52 while competing in the event for the first time as a collegian. Sophomore Chuchu Yang was the runner-up in 2:08.34 while junior Michaela Bargardi was fourth in 2:10.14. Bennett also took second in the 50 freestyle (25.03 seconds) and was part of CSU's top-finishing team in the 200 medley relay.
Yang, McQueary, junior Claudia Zido and Bennett finished the 200 medley relay second in 1:48.91.
McQueary and senior Tobie Zeller finished 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.72 and 1:06.90, respectively.
Marinelli won the 100 freestyle in 53.09 seconds and was CSU's top finisher in the 200 IM, where she took third in 2:12.93.
McNamara continued her dominance in the 200 butterfly, winning by over four seconds in 2:04.10. Classmate Morgan Massie and McNamara finished second and third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.66 and 2:26.90, respectively.
Oltman won the 100 backstroke for CSU in 58.41 seconds while senior Jamie VanDewerker was third in 59.51.
Freshman Irena Weclawiak and Zido finished in second and third in both the 200 and 500 freestyle. The rookie was the runner-up in the 200 (1:55.84) while Zido was third (1:57.09). In the 500, Weclawiak finished in 5:15.85 while Zido stopped the clock in 5:18.21.
Bobick was third in the 50 freestyle in 25.64 seconds. Sophomore Madisyn Jaszcz and freshman Lexie Kostelnik also notched third-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (1:00.54) and the 1000 freestyle (10:51.69), respectively.
Zido, Bobick, Weclawiak and VanDewerker combined to finish the 200 freestyle relay in second place in 1:39.87.
Freshman Erica Henrichsen was third in 1-meter diving as she tied her season best with 233.20 points.
Cleveland State will be right back in action Saturday with its final dual of the season at Buffalo.
