ASHLAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams resumed action by sweeping host Ashland Saturday afternoon inside Messerly Natatorium.

The CSU women won, 182-90, while the Viking men posted a 176-105 victory. Cleveland State won 28 of the 32 combined events on the day, winning 14 of 16 on both the men's and women's sides.

Nine different Viking women won individual events while eight CSU men posted at least one first-place finish.

Freshman Lexie Kostelnik and junior Molly McNamara both won a pair of swimming events. Rookie Erica Henrichsen won on both diving boards with scores of 228.45 and 236.25 on 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively.

Kostelnik won the 200 butterfly in 2:17.68 and claimed the 500 freestyle in 5:16.62. She won the former event by over four seconds and the latter by over 10 seconds.

McNamara topped the field in the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.04 and the 100 butterfly in 58.11 seconds, winning both events by over two seconds. It was the first time McNamara swam the 200 breaststroke as a collegian.

Sophomore Gabriella Marinelli joined Kostelnik in helping CSU sweep the distance events as she won the 1000 freestyle in 10:57.00. She was over 14 seconds clear of the field while swimming the event for the first time as a collegian.

Senior Tobie Zeller teamed up with McNamara to sweep the breaststroke events for the Vikings, as Zeller took first in the 100 in 1:06.84.

Freshman Alana Cartwright and sophomore Chuchu Yang combined to sweep the backstroke events for Cleveland State. Cartwright won the 100 in a personal-best 1:00.32, winning by over two seconds, while Yang topped the field in the 200 in 2:08.59, nearly three seconds clear of the runner-up.

Senior Jamie VanDewerker claimed the 50 freestyle win for CSU (25.02) while rookie Dana Bender was the first to touch the wall in the 200 IM (2:19.00).

CSU's winning quartet in the 200 medley relay—junior Cassandra Oltman, freshman Gracyn McQueary, sophomore Madisyn Jaszcz and junior Abbie Kaple—stopped the clock in 1:50.55.

The Vikings won the 200 free relay in 1:41.44 as junior Claudia Zido, sophomore Meghan Bobick, freshman Shaw Barney and junior Emma Flynn combined for the victory.

On the men's side, sophomores DJ Arslanian and Tyler Stevenson led the way by each winning two individual events and swimming on a winning relay.

Arslanian won the 200 butterfly in 1:54.09, over two seconds clear of the field, and took first in the 100 freestyle in 47.12 seconds. He then swam the lead leg on CSU's winning 200 free relay squad and was followed by senior Grant Wethington, junior Addison Kaufmann and sophomore Austin Spruill. The quartet finished in 1:27.97.

Stevenson won a sprint event and a distance event, taking the 50 freestyle in 22.08 seconds and winning the 500 in 4:46.44. He had begun his day by swimming the second leg on CSU's 200 medley relay that won in 1:36.94. Freshman Dominik Niedzialek led off the winning medley relay, Wethington swam the third leg and freshman Patrick Lance swam the anchor leg.

In addition to being on both winning relay squads, Wethington was first in the 100 butterfly in 51.99 seconds. Niedzialek also won an individual event along with a relay victory, as he won the 1000 freestyle in 9:44.40. He topped the field by over 14 seconds while swimming the event for the first time this season.

Junior Jason van der Touw won both individual events he entered Saturday. He took first in the 100 backstroke, in 52.37 seconds, and in the 200 IM, in 1:56.85.

Junior Sean Mulvin and senior Patrick Tippen also won individual swimming events for the Vikings. Mulvin won the 200 freestyle in 1:46.83, winning by nearly three seconds, and was also the runner-up in the 100 free (47.65). Tippen topped the seven-man field in the 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock in 59.85 seconds.

Junior Curtis Roden swept the diving events for the CSU men. His 1-meter (295.28) and 3-meter (312.30) scores were both fewer than 10 points from NCAA Zones standards.

The CSU women took the top four spots in the 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly and the top three positions in the 100 fly and 200 IM.

Cleveland State will now take about a month off from competition over the semester break. The Vikings will resume action on the second weekend of January as they welcome three Horizon League schools over two days of dual action.
