CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sophomore Molly McNamara and freshman Matt Akers achieved NCAA qualifying standards while junior Jason van der Touw was part of two wins as the Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams hosted the second day of the sixth annual Magnus Cup Saturday inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

The CSU men extended their lead on the second day and sit atop the leaderboard with 1,015.5 points with one day of competition remaining. The Viking women solidified their place Saturday, sitting third of 15 teams, and have 650 points.

McNamara notched a NCAA 'B' standard in the 100 butterfly while Akers contributed a NCAA Zones qualifying score in 1-meter diving. Van der Touw claimed the first individual race win of the meet for CSU with a victory in the 200 freestyle and was also on CSU's winning 200 medley relay.

McNamara finished the 100 fly in 54.45 seconds, as her NCAA cut time missed her own school record by less than one-tenth of a second. She took fourth while freshman Alana Cartwright claimed seventh in 55.93 seconds. Cartwright set a new personal best in the prelims (55.89) to become the fourth fastest performer in program history in the event. Junior Cassandra Oltman finished 11th in the prelims for CSU (57.06) but scratched out of the final.

Oltman and McNamara swam the first and third legs, respectively of CSU's second-place 200 medley relay squad. Seniors Tobie Zeller and Jamie VanDewerker swam second and fourth, as the quartet finished in 1:42.16.

Oltman and VanDewerker both were among the top eight in the 100 backstroke for the Vikings. The junior took fourth in 56.19 seconds while the senior, after posting a new personal best in the preliminaries, finished eighth in 56.60 seconds. McNamara was 11th in the prelims (57.38) before scratching for the finals.

Sophomores Madisyn Jaszcz (57.99) and Chuchu Yang (58.51) took 15th and 18th in the field of 79 competitors in the 100 back. Both set new personal bests in the prelims with Yang moving into the top 10 performers in program history.

After qualifying first and second, Zeller and Cartwright took two of the top five spots in the 100 breaststroke. The freshman was fourth in 1:04.06, and the senior was fifth in 1:04.16. Redshirt senior Madisen Tretter was 12th in 1:04.62, shaving off over a second from her prelims time.

Sophomore Gabriella Marinelli and freshman Irena Weclawiak led the way for Cleveland State in the 200 freestyle. The duo finished third and seventh, respectively, in 1:51.58 and 1:52.05. The rookie moved into the top five performers in CSU program history. Sophomore Meghan Bobick was 20th in the field of 90 in 1:56.22.

Weclawiak, Marinelli, Bobick and junior Claudia Zido compiled CSU's top 800 free relay, finishing eighth in 7:39.04.

Freshman Erica Henrichsen set a new personal best on the 3-meter board. She took fifth with 248.05 points, more than 11 points better than her prelims score. Teammate Maggie Stebick was eighth with 196.50 points.

On the men's side, Akers put forth a season best score in 1-meter diving. His 306.40 points put him second, just behind the winner, but comfortably over the NCAA qualifying mark. He used scores of 54.60—on a reverse 1.5 somersault 1.5 twist free—and 57.00—on a reverse 1.5 somersault 2.5 twist free—on his final two dives to push past the national standard.

Van der Touw and his teammates started the evening session off on a strong note with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Van der Touw led off and was followed by junior Jared Stergar, sophomore DJ Arslanian and sophomore Tyler Stevenson. The quartet finished in 1:30.30.

Van der Touw took home gold in the 200 free by stopping the clock in 1:38.93. In doing so, he became one of the four fastest performers in the event in program history. Junior Sean Mulvin was 10th (1:43.71) while freshman Lee Moffett was 14th (1:43.57). Sophomore Tyler Stevenson was ninth in the prelims (1:42.83) but scratched out of the final.

Arslanian and freshman Dominik Niedzialek both contributed individual runner-up finishes Saturday.

Arslanian was second in the 100 fly in 48.84 seconds. Senior Grant Wethington (51.12) and sophomore Sam Sawyer (51.15) were the next highest placing Vikings in that event in 12th and 15th.

Niedzialek claimed second place in the 100 backstroke in 50.06 seconds while classmate Timothy Kubacki was ninth in 51.60 seconds.

Cleveland State showcased its depth in both the 400 IM and 100 breaststroke, as four Vikings placed among the top 10 in both events.

Kubacki led the way in the 400 IM, taking third in 4:05.79, as he cut over two seconds off his preliminary time. Junior Erwan Mahoudo was fourth (4:07.44), junior MacJilton Lewis was seventh (4:09.11) and freshman Josh Hodges, who posted a new personal best in the prelims, was 10th (4:12.21).

Stergar, Stevenson, junior Addison Kaufmann and senior Patrick Tippen took the final four spots in the final of the 100 breaststroke, with the latter winning a swim-off to qualify for the event. They finished in 57.07, 57.19, 58.09 and 58.98 seconds, respectively. Kaufmann set a new personal best in the prelims (57.65) while Stevenson's time in the finals was a new personal best.

CSU's top 800 freestyle relay team—Arslanian, van der Touw, Stevenson and junior Sean Mulvin—took second in 6:47.51.

The Magnus Cup will conclude Sunday with eight more individual events and the 400 freestyle relay.
